Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif recently announced plans to expand successful solar energy initiatives beyond Balochistan to Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The focus is on converting agricultural tube wells to solar power, aiming to promote sustainable energy practices and reduce reliance on diesel.
During a meeting at the PM House dedicated to solarizing agricultural tube wells and tackling electricity theft, Prime Minister Shehbaz underscored solar energy as the most cost-effective option for electricity generation. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to prioritizing solar solutions.
Projections discussed in the meeting suggest that this transition could potentially save Pakistan $2.7 billion annually in foreign exchange. Prime Minister Shehbaz instructed relevant authorities to collaborate closely with provincial governments to formulate a comprehensive strategy for the solar conversion of agricultural tube wells.
Additionally, Prime Minister Shehbaz directed officials to develop plans to combat electricity theft more effectively. He acknowledged the cooperation of provincial governments in these efforts and advocated for the implementation of a smart metering system to address concerns regarding overbilling.
Overall, the government’s initiative aims to harness solar energy to enhance sustainability in agriculture and alleviate economic pressures associated with energy imports. This initiative marks a significant stride towards energy efficiency and financial savings for Pakistan.
