The Sindh Government is set to launch Pakistan’s inaugural fleet of electric vehicle (EV) taxis, including a distinctive pink variant, according to Minister Sharjeel Memon. This pioneering initiative aims to combat Karachi’s severe air pollution issues, largely stemming from the proliferation of gasoline-powered vehicles and inadequate public transport infrastructure.
While an official launch date remains undisclosed, the introduction of EV taxis promises to offer commuters a potentially more economical alternative amidst escalating fuel prices and surging ride-hailing fares.
This initiative aligns with global endeavors to foster eco-friendly transportation solutions. Karachi has recently bolstered its public transit network by incorporating 30 hybrid and 50 electric buses into the People’s Bus Service, with plans to expand the fleet to a total of 300 vehicles.
These measures underscore a steadfast commitment to curbing air pollution and advancing sustainable mobility options in Karachi, delivering substantial benefits to both the environment and the city’s populace.
