Saudi Arabia Warned Pilgrims of “Above Average” Heat During Hajj 2024

As the anticipation for Hajj 2024 builds among millions of Muslims worldwide, Saudi Arabia has sounded an alarm regarding the scorching temperatures expected during this year’s pilgrimage. Ayman Ghulam, head of the Saudi National Meteorology Centre, delivered a stark message at a recent press briefing, cautioning pilgrims about the extraordinary heat forecasted for the holy cities of Makkah and Madina.

The announcement outlined a significant deviation from normal conditions, with temperatures projected to soar one and a half to two degrees above average. The anticipated peak, at a staggering 44°C (111°F), underscores the severity of the heatwave pilgrims will encounter. Ghulam further emphasized the absence of rainfall and the anticipated humidity level of around 25%, indicating a dry and arid environment throughout the pilgrimage.

Hajj, a fundamental pillar of Islam, commencing on June 14 this year, beckons every physically and financially capable Muslim to undertake this sacred journey at least once in their lifetime. Spanning four days, the pilgrimage entails a series of rituals performed in Makkah and its environs in western Saudi Arabia.

Reflecting on the challenges faced during the previous year’s pilgrimage, where temperatures peaked at 48°C (118°F), resulting in over 2,000 cases of heat-related illnesses, the Saudi authorities are prioritizing preemptive measures to mitigate health risks. Urging pilgrims to stay hydrated, seek shade, and take regular breaks in cool environments, they underscore the importance of heat management strategies.

Echoing Saudi Arabia’s concerns, Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz from Pakistan highlighted the impending start of the Islamic month of Zil Hajj, slated to commence on June 6. Emphasizing the significance of moon sighting, which heralds the countdown to Hajj, he underscored the need for preparedness among pilgrims given the forecasted extreme heat.

Both Saudi and Pakistani authorities advocate thorough planning for hydration and heat resilience, coupled with an understanding of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses. As pilgrims worldwide finalize their arrangements, the cautionary note from Saudi Arabia serves as a pivotal reminder of the physical rigors accompanying the sacred journey of Hajj.

Despite the formidable weather challenges, the essence of Hajj perseveres as a profound spiritual odyssey for countless Muslims. With meticulous preparation and the unwavering support of authorities, pilgrims can embark on this transformative journey with confidence, ensuring their well-being and safety amid the trials of extreme heat.
