Saudi Arabia Paints Arafat Streets White to Protect Hajj Pilgrims from Scorching Heat

In a significant stride towards improving the comfort of Hajj pilgrims, the Roads General Authority has recently completed a groundbreaking project. This initiative involved applying a white coating to the asphalt surrounding Arafat’s Namira Mosque, strategically aimed at reducing temperatures during the pilgrimage’s most demanding phases.

The locally manufactured coating deployed in this project boasts remarkable capabilities, capable of lowering surface temperatures by approximately 20 degrees Celsius. By effectively reflecting sunlight and absorbing less heat compared to conventional asphalt surfaces, it offers a tangible solution to combat the sweltering heat endured by pilgrims.

This collaborative effort, involving multiple agencies, follows a previous successful endeavor that reduced temperatures by 12 to 15 degrees Celsius along pedestrian pathways leading to the Jamarat area. Building upon this triumph, the extension of cooling measures to critical zones like Namira Mosque underscores a commitment to enhancing pilgrims’ well-being.

Covering an extensive area of 25,000 square meters around the mosque, the white, heat-reflective material promises a more comfortable environment for pilgrims as they engage in prayers and religious activities. Anticipated to make a notable difference in overall pilgrimage experiences, it aims to alleviate heat-related discomfort and mitigate health risks.
