In a groundbreaking collaboration under Generation Unlimited, the Youth Policy Lab (YPL) platform has united UN agencies – UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDP – with the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP), alongside the School of Leadership Foundation (SoLF). Together, they introduced the Policy Research Challenge (PRC) in 2023, a pivotal initiative elevating the voices of young individuals in policy formulation, particularly regarding inclusive climate change policies.
The PRC serves as a platform for young people to actively engage in policy decisions, ensuring their unique perspectives and needs are incorporated into developmental strategies. Focused on climate adaptation, the initiative hones young researchers’ capabilities while fostering community involvement. This transdisciplinary approach addresses various climate-related issues across different districts, emphasizing the critical role of climate adaptation in human capital development, notably in Pakistan.
A highlight of the PRC was the roundtable event, convening policymakers, private sector stakeholders, and young researchers. This forum aimed to bridge the gap between research and policy formulation, advocating for the inclusion of youth voices in policy recommendations. Key figures, including Rana Mashood and Dr. Rubina Ali, emphasized the essential role of young people in combating climate change, highlighting their innovative ideas and community-based solutions.
The Policy Interface Matchup facilitated constructive dialogue between young researchers and ministry representatives, aligning youth-driven research with governmental policies to ensure inclusivity and efficacy. Professor Dr. Muhammad Mukhtaar lauded the active involvement of young researchers, stressing the integration of youth perspectives into national strategies for a more inclusive and resilient future.
Organized under the auspices of Generation Unlimited, UNICEF Pakistan, UNDP Pakistan, UNFPA Pakistan, and SoLF, the Policy Research Challenge exemplifies the transformative power of youth in shaping sustainable policies. Moving forward, these young researchers will continue to collaborate with the government, providing input on policy matters and inspiring positive change towards a more equitable and resilient future.
