Govt Rejects Suspension of Social Media Apps During Muharram

The federal government recently declined a proposal from the Punjab government to suspend popular social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, and WhatsApp during the period from Muharram 6 to 11. Instead, federal authorities have opted to implement targeted security measures tailored for Muharram. They have authorized the shutdown of mobile phone signals only at specific locations where religious processions and large gatherings are anticipated.

The Punjab government’s initial request was driven by concerns over misinformation on social media that could potentially escalate sectarian tensions during Muharram. In response, the federal government’s decision reflects a nuanced approach aimed at maintaining both public safety and open communication channels during this sensitive religious observance period.

By focusing on localized signal shutdowns rather than a sweeping ban on social media, federal authorities aim to strike a balance that ensures security without completely hindering the flow of information and communication nationwide. This approach underscores their commitment to managing potential risks associated with misinformation while preserving the fundamental right to access and share information.
